About Debbie DeWitt

Debbie DeWitt My work has evolved as a result of my graphic design training combined with my love of painting and drawing. As a child, I always enjoyed artwork and was in constant need of art supplies. I studied classical painting and drawing at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. There I began a love affair with oil paints. I love the smell and the way they move around the canvas. I also work in pencil, pastels and acrylics.

My life took a dramatic change when I fell in love, married and immediately began raising a family. I always dreamed of returning to art school and finishing my degree. That dream became a reality when my children entered school. I began studying fine arts at Parsons School of Design in New York City. I changed my course to graphic design believing the digital skills I would acquire would help my career, while my fine arts knowledge would enhance my graphic work.

I painted solely in oils but quickly realized the benefit of fast drying acrylics. At the same time, the shabby chic decor movement was in full swing. I began experimenting with acrylics on plywood. I love the way the plywood responds to the acrylic paint and the texture of the wood is revealed. It also lends itself well to the vintage and aged looks that are desirable now. I love texture in my work and use mediums on canvas as well to create the same dramatic affect.

I began working for an art publisher for the home decor market in 2004 and quickly started having success. My "Words to Live By" series was picked up by a number of large retailers, including Bed, Bath and Beyond, Homegoods, and Linens & Things and broke many publishing records. I continue to work in this field and have many pieces placed in the retail market.

I also create faux paintings and murals for private homes and businesses. I have been able to bring many of those techniques to my work for the home decor market.
